The fourth-generation X5 underwent a midcycle update for 2024, introducing refreshed exterior styling, upgraded powertrains, and enhanced technology features. For 2025, the X5 sDrive40i, xDrive40i, and xDrive50e now come with standard full LED lighting, including cornering lights. Meanwhile, the high-performance X5 M remains unchanged.
2025 X5 Powertrain Options

Each pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all are mild hybrids except the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid. How Fast Is the X5?
For those seeking top-tier performance, the X5 M is the standout option. BMW claims it can rocket from 0-60 mph in just 3.7 seconds—remarkably quick for an SUV.
Other models are also impressively swift. The M60i reaches 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, while the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid is estimated to complete the sprint in 4.6 seconds. The base 40i models clock in at around 5.2 seconds.
Safety Ratings and Features
While the 2024 X5 performed well in IIHS crash tests, it didn’t earn either of the institute’s top safety awards. It wasn’t assessed in the updated moderate overlap front crash test, and its headlights received only Marginal or Acceptable ratings, depending on the trim. There’s a chance the 2025 model could improve its rating.
In NHTSA testing, the 2024 X5’s base mild-hybrid variants received a four-star overall rating (out of five). However, other trims have not yet been evaluated, and NHTSA has yet to rate the 2025 X5.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and self-parking assist. Additionally, the X5 comes equipped with rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, and newly added cornering lights.

Technology
Large, curved displays are becoming a defining feature in modern vehicles, and the X5 follows this trend with a sleek dual-screen setup. This includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen.
Standard features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, over-the-air updates, power-adjustable front seats, and power-folding side mirrors.
Which 2025 X5 Trim Is the Best Choice?
The 2025 BMW X5 is offered in four trims: sDrive40i/xDrive40i, xDrive50e, M60i, and M Competition.
For a balance of sportiness and efficiency, the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid stands out as the most appealing option. It delivers the best fuel economy, an all-electric driving range, and nearly matches the M60i’s performance—making it a win-win.
Pricing starts at approximately $66,500 for the base sDrive40i RWD model and climbs to around $74,000 for the xDrive50e. At the top of the range, the X5 M Competition carries a staggering starting price of over $125,500.
