Rivian has unveiled a new special edition of its Tri-Motor R1, named the “California Dune Edition.” This version features an exclusive color and a package of options specifically designed to enhance off-road performance.
Last week, Rivian teased this release through email and social media with the cryptic message, “a mirage takes shape Feb 19.” The teaser images included several views of sand dunes, along with a black-and-white photo of a Rivian vehicle, leading many to speculate that a new color would be part of the reveal.
It turns out that assumption was correct—but there’s even more to this announcement.
The California Dune Edition, available in limited quantities, introduces both new exterior and interior colors, which Rivian describes as being “inspired by the mesmerizing landscapes of California’s desert dunes.” Additionally, this edition comes with a distinct set of features prioritizing off-road capabilities over luxury refinements.

To align with its off-road focus, the California Dune Edition replaces Rivian’s upscale “Ascend” interior—standard on all other Tri-Motor R1 models—with the more rugged “Adventure” interior. As a result, this version forgoes some premium Ascend features, such as passenger lumbar adjustment and an electrochromic roof.
In exchange, the California Dune Edition comes with several standard upgrades, including:
- California Dune interior badging
- Darkout Package
- All-Terrain Package
- Sound + Vision Package
- Powered Tonneau Cover (for R1T)
- One pair of Dark Cargo Crossbars
- MAXTRAX Recovery Boards
- MAXTRAX Recovery Board Mount
While the Rivian R1 is already known for its strong off-road performance, this edition enhances its capabilities even further, similar to what aftermarket modifications often provide.
The California Dune Edition includes Rivian’s all-terrain package, which features smaller wheels to allow for more tire sidewall—improving off-road handling—a spare tire, and a reinforced underbody shield. The wheels are available in either a dark finish or a lighter shade that complements the California Dune exterior.

A notable addition to this edition is a third-party accessory: MAXTRAX recovery boards, which come mounted on the included roof cargo rack. These boards are designed to assist in freeing a vehicle that becomes stuck in deep sand.
Despite all these additions, the California Dune Edition maintains the same base price as the standard Tri-Motor R1: $99,900 for the R1T and $105,900 for the R1S. Instead of the premium Ascend interior, buyers receive an array of off-road-focused upgrades.
The California Dune Edition is available now on Rivian’s website and will also be showcased at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, from March 7-15 at Rivian’s Electric Roadhouse.
