Reports emerging from China indicate that Tesla may begin production of an extended wheelbase, three-row version of the newly updated Model Y as early as next month.
The speculation originated from well-known Chinese automotive blogger who has consistently monitored Tesla’s developments and activities within the country.
Ongoing Model Y Rumors
Over the weekend, additional rumors from China surfaced, suggesting that Tesla is planning to release a variant of its top-selling all-electric crossover. Internally referred to as “E80,” this version of the Model Y is said to be a simplified or stripped-down model, akin to the Cybertruck Long Range Rear Wheel Drive, which is a less-equipped version of the Cybertruck All Wheel Drive.
According to a report by CNEV Post, it is still uncertain whether the rumored Model Y “E80” will feature a three-row seating configuration. Meanwhile, Reuters previously referenced a separate Model Y version codenamed “E41” in a report last month. That version is expected to enter production at Tesla’s Giga Shanghai facility in 2026. Giga Shanghai currently holds the distinction of being Tesla’s highest-output factory and serves as a central hub for vehicle exports.

Potential for a Three-Row Model Y
Although deliveries of the new Model Y have already begun in China, Tesla is presently offering the updated crossover only with a five-seat layout. Even the “E80” variant that made headlines recently appears to follow this configuration, with no confirmed plans for seven seats.
In previous iterations, Tesla has offered a seven-seat version of the Model Y. However, those models were not built on an extended wheelbase, which significantly limited the comfort and practicality of the third row, making it suitable primarily for children or smaller adults.
If the latest reports are accurate and Tesla China is preparing to manufacture a seven-seat Model Y with an extended wheelbase, the result would likely be a more spacious and usable third row. This move could position Tesla to better compete in China’s MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) segment, where domestic manufacturers such as BYD already have a strong presence.
