Toyota is gearing up for an eventful few years. With numerous updates and redesigns on the horizon across its entire lineup, the practical-minded automaker is steadily laying the foundation for its next wave of fan-favorite vehicles. Among the most eagerly awaited changes is the new-generation Corolla, which is expected to arrive in hatchback, sedan, and estate body styles. That naturally raises the question—what’s in store for the Corolla Cross?
This compact SUV, positioned as a smaller, more affordable, and less rugged alternative to the RAV4, is also due for a refresh. Although Toyota hasn’t released official information just yet, all indications suggest a notable update is coming within the next few years.
A Rendered Glimpse Into the Future
While no prototypes have surfaced in public testing so far, digital rendering artist Theophilus Chin—better known as Theottle—has taken the initiative to envision what the refreshed Corolla Cross might look like. He shared a series of speculative renderings that apply Toyota’s latest design elements to the compact SUV. These concepts borrow significantly from the Urban Cruiser EV, a smaller electric SUV that previewed several of Toyota’s newer styling cues.
The rendered model showcases the brand’s now-familiar “hammerhead” front fascia, featuring slim LED headlights and a clean, grille-free front end. That part of the design feels like a natural evolution. However, the side and rear sections in the renderings are inspired by the Suzuki e-Vitara, which shares its underpinnings with the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV. Realistically, the next Corolla Cross is expected to follow a more distinctive path, incorporating sharper lines similar to those seen on the latest C-HR and C-HR+, while likely retaining a boxier rear design to preserve cargo space and practicality.
A Cabin Focused on Comfort and Connectivity
Inside the cabin, expect Toyota to lean into digital transformation. A more connected and modern cockpit layout is anticipated, with larger infotainment screens and an interface aligned with the latest trends from the brand’s broader lineup. Still, the Corolla Cross will likely continue to emphasize usability and family-friendliness. Additionally, a more robust suite of advanced driver assistance technologies is expected, further enhancing the SUV’s safety credentials.
Under the Skin: Familiar Platform, Enhanced Powertrains
Toyota typically opts for evolution over revolution when it comes to underpinnings, and that philosophy will likely carry over here. The next Corolla Cross is expected to remain on the proven TNGA-C platform, albeit with incremental upgrades. However, the powertrain department could see more noteworthy changes. Toyota is currently working on a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which could be offered in multiple versions—including turbocharged, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants. This expanded lineup would bring improved efficiency and performance while maintaining the reliability buyers have come to expect.
